Bazian, Kurdistan – 5 January 2023- ONEX Holding is pleased to announce the successful installation and commissioning of its new Bazian II- 500MW Simple Cycle Power Plant, marking a major milestone in Iraq’s energy sector. This project, powered by two GE 9F.04 gas turbines, reinforces ONEX’s commitment to enhancing Iraq’s power generation capacity and energy security.

State-of-the-Art Power Generation

The 9F.04 gas turbines, known for their superior efficiency and robust performance, provide a simple cycle output of 288MW each, with the ability to transition to combined cycle operation for increased efficiency. With a combined cycle efficiency exceeding 60%, these turbines ensure high availability, reliability, and fuel flexibility, capable of operating on natural gas and distillate fuels. This cutting-edge technology brings greater stability and efficiency to Iraq’s power grid and we will be working begin the next phase in due time.

Strengthening Iraq’s Energy Security

This new 500MW power plant, strategically located in Bazian, Kurdistan, significantly boosts Iraq’s electricity generation. By utilizing natural gas from the Khor More gas field, this project supports Iraq’s drive toward cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, reducing dependency on costly fuel imports and enhancing the country’s energy independence.

Next Phase: Expansion to 1,250MW

With the successful commissioning of this 500MW Simple Cycle Plant, ONEX is now working towards progressing the completion of the 250MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) addition to the existing Bazian-I plant. Scheduled for completion by June 2024, this upgrade will further enhance efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, bringing ONEX’s total generation capacity to 1,250MW.
