ONEX commissions the Bazian II 500 MW simple-cycle power plant
In brief
Powered by two GE 9F.04 gas turbines, Bazian II is a major milestone for Iraq’s power sector.
Bazian, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, 5 January 2023 — ONEX has successfully installed and commissioned its new Bazian II 500 MW simple-cycle power plant, a major milestone for Iraq’s energy sector.
State-of-the-art generation
Bazian II is powered by two GE 9F.04 gas turbines, each with a simple-cycle output of 288 MW and the ability to move to combined-cycle operation at efficiencies above 60%. The turbines offer high availability, reliability and fuel flexibility, operating on natural gas and distillate fuels.
Strengthening Iraq’s energy security
Using natural gas from the Khor Mor gas field, the plant supports Iraq’s move towards cleaner energy sources, reduces dependency on costly fuel imports and strengthens the country’s energy independence. The project further strengthens ONEX’s position as one of GE’s largest partners in the region.
Next phase: 1,250 MW
ONEX is now progressing a 250 MW combined-cycle addition to the existing Bazian I plant, scheduled for completion by June 2024, which will bring total generation capacity to 1,250 MW.
