In brief

The commissioning of a 250 MW combined-cycle expansion at Bazian brings ONEX’s total generation capacity to 1,250 MW.

Bazian, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, 1 June 2024 — ONEX has completed and commissioned its 250 MW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) expansion, bringing the group’s total power generation capacity to 1,250 MW and making ONEX the second-largest private independent power producer in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

More power, no additional fuel

The expansion converts waste heat from the existing GE 9E.03 gas turbines into additional electricity through a GE steam turbine, significantly increasing plant efficiency and reducing emissions per megawatt-hour. The plant continues to run on natural gas from the Khor Mor gas field, reducing reliance on liquid fuels.

With the expansion, ONEX supplies electricity to approximately 1.5 million homes, reinforcing its role in Iraq’s energy security and economic development.

Looking ahead

The milestone reflects ONEX’s long-term commitment to expanding Iraq’s power infrastructure through strategic investment, advanced technology and partnerships that support economic growth and industrial development.
