The 115,000 dwt crude oil tanker is the world’s first merchant vessel certified for quiet underwater operations.

The 115,000 dwt crude oil tanker ONEX Peace has become the world’s first merchant ship to receive DNV’s SILENT-E class notation, which recognises a vessel’s ability to limit underwater radiated noise during operations.

The notation ensures ships do not exceed average-to-moderate underwater radiated noise levels. Vessels holding it can minimise their impact on marine life and document noise performance for authorities when transiting environmentally sensitive areas.

“ONEX Peace is a competitive ship that can operate in waters with strict regulations without disrupting the sea’s ecosystem.” — ONEX DMCC

DNV, the shipbuilder and the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering carried out underwater noise measurement and analysis of the vessel as part of a joint research project, after which DNV granted the notation.
